Hello everyone, let’s dive into the latest developments surrounding Hunter Biden and his legal troubles, which are making headlines once again. This time, new documents filed by Special Counsel David Weiss in the Central District of California allege that Hunter Biden was paid by a Romanian oligarch to influence U.S. policy and public opinion during the time his father, Joe Biden, was vice president.
The Romanian businessman in question, Gabriel Popoviciu, is expected to testify against Hunter Biden in a trial set to begin on September 5 in Los Angeles. According to the filings, Hunter Biden entered into an oral agreement in 2015 to help Popoviciu contest bribery charges in Romania. Prosecutors are prepared to introduce evidence that Hunter Biden and a business associate were compensated by Popoviciu, who was attempting to sway U.S. policy and public opinion in his favor.
This case is significant because it’s the closest prosecutors have come to directly linking President Biden to his son’s international business dealings. The filings reveal concerns from Hunter Biden and his associates about potential political ramifications for Joe Biden, highlighting the sensitive nature of their work.
The documents also describe a “Management Services Agreement” between Popoviciu and Hunter Biden’s business associate, which purportedly provided management services to real estate properties in Romania. However, prosecutors allege that this was a cover, and the real purpose of the payments was to influence U.S. policy.
One interesting point in the filings is that Special Counsel Weiss acknowledges Hunter Biden’s legal team’s efforts to dismiss allegations related to potentially violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
While the government does not plan to reference allegations of violating FARA or improperly coordinating with the Obama Administration, they do intend to present evidence that Hunter Biden and his associates structured their business relationship to avoid registering as foreign agents. Furthermore, they allegedly reached out to government officials, including those at the U.S. Department of State.
Between November 2015 and 2017, Hunter Biden and two business associates reportedly split more than $3 million in payments from Popoviciu. The filings suggest that Hunter Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes during this period, while also filing false tax returns.
The funds were allegedly used for a lavish lifestyle, including spending millions on drugs, escorts, luxury cars, and other high-priced items. While Hunter Biden has since paid the taxes, he faces three felony charges and six misdemeanors related to the tax case.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 21 in Los Angeles, and this case adds another layer to the ongoing legal saga surrounding Hunter Biden. In addition to this, he was convicted in June by a federal jury in Delaware for lying about his illegal drug use while purchasing a gun. Sentencing for that case is still pending.
