One of the most consequential coaching moves of this NFL offseason appears to be nearing the finish line. According to multiple reports, John Harbaugh and the New York Giants are working toward an agreement that would make the Super Bowl–winning coach the franchise’s next head man, a pairing that has felt increasingly inevitable as the process has unfolded.
While the deal has not yet been finalized, momentum is clearly pointing toward New York. Harbaugh spent hours Wednesday at the Giants’ facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in what was widely viewed as a decisive in-person interview.
From the outset of the search to replace Brian Daboll on a full-time basis, Harbaugh was believed to be the Giants’ top target, and that belief only strengthened once he became available.
Harbaugh’s unexpected departure from the Baltimore Ravens instantly reshaped the coaching market. Fired after a season that ended with a playoff miss on a last-second field goal, Harbaugh nonetheless left Baltimore as one of the most successful head coaches of his era.
Under his leadership, the Ravens reached the postseason 12 times and captured the Super Bowl following the 2012 season, establishing a culture of consistency and physicality that defined the franchise for more than a decade.
That résumé made Harbaugh the most sought-after candidate of the current cycle and arguably one of the most coveted coaching options in recent NFL history. Teams such as Tennessee and Atlanta were believed to have interest, but New York quickly emerged as the frontrunner.
Even veteran sports agent Leigh Steinberg noted that the Giants stood out as a particularly strong fit, citing the organization’s history, market, and need for a stabilizing figure.
Adding an unusual wrinkle to the story, President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Harbaugh on Truth Social, later going a step further by explicitly urging the Giants to hire him. While presidential approval doesn’t close deals in the NFL, the endorsement underscored just how high-profile this potential hire has become.
If completed, the hire would mark a clear pivot for the Giants — toward proven leadership, organizational discipline, and a coach with a track record of winning at the highest level. For a franchise searching for stability and relevance, John Harbaugh may be the most consequential move they could make.
