Popular children’s YouTuber “Ms. Rachel,” whose brand is built around toddler education and cheerful singalongs, has once again found herself at the center of political controversy after appearing alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to promote his universal childcare initiative.
The collaboration, framed as a friendly and accessible discussion of early childhood education, featured the pair singing “The Wheels on the Bus” while presenting the mayor’s childcare program in language and imagery tailored to very young audiences.
On its face, the appearance was lighthearted and familiar to parents who recognize Ms. Rachel’s distinctive style. Behind the pastel colors and upbeat tone, however, critics see a deliberate blending of children’s content with political advocacy. Mamdani’s childcare proposal is a cornerstone of his broader socialist agenda, and the decision to roll it out through a figure with enormous influence over families with toddlers raised questions about the boundaries between education, entertainment, and politics.
This morning, Ms. Rachel and I visited District 2 Pre-K Center, where we sang and read with the wonderful students and educators. We also discussed universal childcare – and how we’re making it happen for NYC! pic.twitter.com/974M24kt64

Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, is not a marginal internet figure. At 43, she has built a media empire around early learning, amassing more than ten million subscribers on YouTube and millions more on TikTok. Her videos routinely rack up tens of millions of views, and her reach now extends well beyond screens, with books and clothing sold at major retailers like Target. For many parents, she is a trusted presence in their homes, often played daily for very young children.
That trust is precisely what has made her increasing visibility on social and political issues controversial. Accurso has previously voiced support for progressive causes, including public statements aligned with the “Free Palestine” movement and vocal participation in LGBTQ Pride Month.
Last year, she drew backlash after posting a video celebrating Pride, wearing a rainbow-striped outfit and offering an explicit message of affirmation. Anticipating criticism, she told viewers who objected that they were free to stop watching, emphasizing that she was “standing strong in love” rather than chasing views.

Her appearance with Mayor Mamdani fits neatly into that trajectory. Supporters argue that universal childcare is a nonpartisan issue that directly affects families and that using a familiar educational figure helps communicate its benefits. Critics counter that introducing political messaging through a platform designed for toddlers blurs ethical lines and leverages parental trust for ideological ends.
