What began as a routine effort to recover a stolen vehicle quickly spiraled into a dangerous confrontation Sunday night in the Bronx, leaving multiple police officers injured and an 18-year-old suspect hospitalized after an officer opened fire.
According to police, the incident started when a license plate reader detected a Kia bearing New Jersey plates that had been reported stolen the previous day. Once the alert was received, several unmarked NYPD vehicles moved in and began tracking the car through the Bronx.
Officers eventually surrounded the vehicle after the driver pulled over, seemingly bringing the situation to a close.
Instead, the encounter erupted into chaos.

Police say the driver refused to comply with officers’ commands and suddenly put the vehicle into reverse. The Kia allegedly slammed into one of the unmarked police vehicles and struck an NYPD sergeant during the maneuver.
The situation rapidly became dangerous for officers positioned around the car.
According to investigators, one officer was forced to leap out of the vehicle’s path and ended up landing on top of a parked car as the suspect continued moving through the scene.
“With the sergeant on the ground in front of the Kia and multiple additional officers in close proximity to the car, the officer on top of the parked vehicle discharged his firearm at the driver,” NYPD Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo said.
The officer’s shot struck the driver at least once in the arm, bringing the confrontation to an end.
Emergency crews transported the 18-year-old suspect to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

The injured sergeant and several other officers were also taken to area hospitals. Authorities said their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and all were listed in stable condition.
Police organizations quickly expressed relief that the outcome was not even worse.
“We are grateful that our Sergeant, who was involved in this incident was not seriously injured and is expected to make a full recovery,” the Sergeants Benevolent Association said in a statement.
The union also called for prosecutors to aggressively pursue charges against the suspect.
“Moving forward it is imperative that the Bronx District Attorney prosecute this perp to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement continued.
As investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting, authorities revealed that the suspect was already known to law enforcement.

While police have not publicly identified the driver, officials said he had been arrested in February in connection with a Bronx shooting. According to reports, he was facing multiple felony charges stemming from that earlier case.
The latest incident is now under investigation, as is standard procedure whenever an NYPD officer discharges a weapon.
For police officers on the scene, however, the facts were simple and immediate. What started as an attempt to recover a stolen car allegedly turned into a life-threatening encounter in seconds, with officers scrambling to avoid being struck as the vehicle moved through the tightly packed scene.
