In a shocking turn of events, the U.S. Secret Service on Wednesday confirmed that the white powdery substance discovered in the West Wing of the White House last Sunday is indeed cocaine.
The item was discovered in a plastic baggie inside a cubby used by staff and visitors, prompting a brief evacuation of the White House, and sending shock waves throughout Washington D.C. Initially, Drug Enforcement Agents tested the white powdery substance and determined that it was cocaine, although a final confirmation was necessary to be certain.
Although sources familiar with the investigation have refused to confirm whether Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s troubled son who has battled cocaine and crack addiction in the past, is under suspicion, the Secret Service has not ruled out the possibility.
“The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The discovery has raised questions about the security measures taken at the White House, and how the movement of people and items are monitored. The cubby where the cocaine was discovered is used by employees and visitors to store phones and personal items, an official told The New York Post, raising fears that future security breaches could allow for the smuggling of drugs and other contraband into the White House.
President Biden was at Camp David for the holiday weekend and did not return to the White House until Tuesday morning, leaving many speculating that the cocaine most likely was brought into the White House at an earlier date.
The discovery of cocaine in the White House is causing concern and raising serious questions about drug use nationwide. In addition, the investigation into the alleged security breach is taking up extensive resources, resulting in a call from Washington insiders for more stringent security protocols at the White House.
