New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is reportedly frustrated with The View after the ABC daytime talk show declined an effort to feature three progressive congressional candidates he has endorsed, opening a new front in the ongoing tensions between the city’s rising left-wing movement and mainstream media outlets.
According to Fox News, aides to Mamdani criticized the Disney-owned program after it declined a pitch to invite the candidates onto the show. The disagreement intensified after two of the program’s co-hosts criticized one of those candidates over past social media posts.
Mamdani has thrown his support behind three Democratic congressional nominees in New York: Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier. All three defeated more establishment-backed Democrats in their respective primaries, and Mamdani has been working to raise their national profiles ahead of the general election.
That effort reportedly included outreach to The View, but the show did not extend invitations.
The dispute was further fueled by comments made during the program’s June 24 broadcast.
Discussing Chevalier’s past online activity, co-host Sara Haines sharply criticized the candidate.
“I’m gonna full-blown call her an antisemite. She would proudly call herself that, trust me,” Haines said during the episode.
Chevalier has faced scrutiny over social media posts made before her congressional campaign. According to reports, posts attributed to an X account she previously operated included calls to abolish police departments, praise for Marxism, favorable references to members of the former Soviet Union, and criticism of schools and libraries for not doing more to promote Marxist ideas.
Other resurfaced posts reportedly included a statement that she had used an American flag to wipe her hands. The account, which reportedly operated under the name “Darializabonet,” was deleted in June 2022.
Those posts have become a focal point for critics of Chevalier’s candidacy, although she has not recently commented publicly on many of the older statements.
ABC has defended its decision not to feature the candidates, according to Fox News. The network reportedly maintains that The View generally interviews elected officials rather than candidates actively seeking office, making the decision consistent with its usual booking practices.
The show’s political guest lineup has also drawn increased attention in recent months.
After years of criticism that Republicans rarely appeared on the program, The View hosted Vice President J.D. Vance. According to Fox News, the appearance drew more than 3.3 million viewers, making it the highest-rated episode in the show’s history.
