A security breach at NBC’s Today show studios on Thursday morning ended with an intruder in police custody after he allegedly confronted co-anchor Craig Melvin inside a restricted area of the building.
According to TMZ, the man initially entered the studio complex looking for longtime weather anchor Al Roker. After failing to locate Roker, he made his way into an unauthorized area where he encountered Melvin.
The outlet reported that the man allegedly lunged toward Melvin while shouting a racial slur. The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. and was not captured on the show’s live broadcast.
Security personnel and staff quickly responded, detaining the man until law enforcement arrived. TMZ reported that the suspect was a white male, was not armed, and that no one was injured during the encounter.
The incident was not mentioned during Thursday’s edition of Today.
NBC News later confirmed that a security incident had occurred at the network’s Manhattan studios.
“There was a security incident this morning,” the network said in a statement provided to Variety.
“An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security.”
The statement added that the suspect was detained without further incident.

“The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured.”
NBC also said it is cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.
“NBC and ‘Today’ take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”
According to Page Six, the incident has heightened concerns among employees about security at the highly public television studio.
One source told the outlet that staff members were already uneasy following the reported kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, from her Arizona home earlier this year.
The source said Thursday’s confrontation underscored how quickly a dangerous situation could develop.
“He could have stabbed Craig. He could have planted a bomb,” the source said, noting that the suspect was carrying a backpack.
Employees also pointed to the unique security challenges posed by Studio 1A, which sits in a heavily trafficked public area at Rockefeller Plaza.
“It’s a difficult place for security because it’s really public,” the source said.
“There’s a coffee shop inside the area that staff use to get in and out. People come in with entourages—all the celebrities have like 12 people with them, so it’s not unusual for a whole group of people to be going through security at once.”
Despite those challenges, the source did not suggest that NBC had ignored security concerns.
“I don’t think it’s like they don’t care,” the person said. “It’s just a complicated place to do security. I imagine there will be meetings today though.”
The incident is expected to prompt a review of security procedures at the network’s studios as investigators continue examining how the suspect gained access to a restricted area before reaching one of the program’s anchors.
