Several House Dems Cross Partisan Divide For Resolution

Today, we’re diving into a significant political event that unfolded in the House of Representatives. On Thursday, several House Democrats crossed party lines to support a GOP-drafted resolution condemning Vice President Kamala Harris for her perceived failures as President Joe Biden’s “border czar.” This resolution underscores the contentious and highly charged issue of border security in the United States.

The resolution, aimed at Harris, passed with a vote of 220-196. Six Democrats, including Reps. Jared Golden of Maine, Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Mary Peltola of Alaska, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington state, voted in favor of the resolution. Ten Democrats and six Republicans did not vote, but no Republicans opposed the measure.

On the House floor, Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York criticized Harris’s handling of the border situation. “No matter what congressional district you go to, the number one issue facing Americans is Kamala Harris’ open border crisis,” she stated, according to The Hill. Stefanik accused Harris of advancing “Far Left Democrats’ failed open border policies” and prioritizing the needs of illegal immigrants over American safety.

House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed these sentiments, describing Harris as a co-conspirator in the policies leading to what he called a border crisis. “Crises owned by Kamala Harris: The border crisis, the inflation crisis, the crime crisis, everything happening with the economy, our national security, weakness on the world stage. She [is] an equal partner on all of that. She can’t run from that, she has to run on it. And we will ensure that the American people know the facts,” Johnson stated.

The resolution itself “strongly condemns the Biden Administration and its Border Czar, Kamala Harris’s, failure to secure the United States border.” It attributes the ongoing border crisis to what it describes as far-left Democrat open border policies. The resolution highlights several key points, including:

  • The assertion that illegal immigrants with violent criminal histories pose an existential threat to American safety, citing specific cases like those of Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungary, and Rachel Morin.
  • The mention of 7.9 million interactions with illegal immigrants at the Southern Border, which the resolution claims costs the United States approximately $150.7 billion each year, or $1,156 per taxpayer annually.
  • Harris’s delay of 93 days after being named border czar to visit the border and her alleged lack of communication with key border protection leaders.

The resolution quotes former Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, who stated, “I’ve never had one conversation with the president [Biden] or the vice president [Harris], for that matter. I was the Chief of the Border Patrol, I commanded 21,000 people. That’s a problem.”
