President Joe Biden is responding to the ongoing debt ceiling issue with blame for Republicans, and he has refused to take any responsibility for the situation.
During an interview with Fox News‘ Peter Doocy, Biden expressed that the proposals put forth by Republicans on increasing the debt ceiling were “simply, quite frankly, unacceptable.”
Although the U.S. could default on June 1st due to the debt crisis, President Biden is adamant that he will not agree to any deal that includes a tax break for the oil industry, which earned an estimated $200 billion in 2020. He also noted that, based on what he offered, he would be blameless on the matter.
“One of the things some [people] are contemplating,” Biden said. “Well, I gotta be careful here. I think there are some MAGA Republicans in the House who know the damage that it would do to the economy, and because I am president, and presidents are responsible for everything, Biden would take the blame. And that‘s the one way to ensure Biden‘s not re–elected.”
Currently, both the White House and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif) are engaging in negotiations on the matter, but McCarthy claims no progress has been made thus far.
Experts believe the 14th Amendment that Biden proposed using to raise the debt ceiling may not stand up in court or pass legal muster.
In response to the debt crisis, the Republican party has proposed increasing defense spending while cutting overall expenditure, while the Biden Administration has proposed keeping non–defense discretionary spending flat for the following year as a solution.
Biden‘s statements have come amid the many questions from reporters that he has been dodging about the debt ceiling, as he had remained silent for nearly 100 days about the issue.
This national crisis is a continually developing story, and the Biden Administration has yet to release an official plan to address the situation. With just over a week until default, both parties have yet to come to a conclusion that is suitable for everyone.
Time will tell how the Biden Administration will handle the situation, and if they will accept the Republican party‘s proposals or come up with their own solution. Until then, the American people can only wait and watch.
