Trump Halts Ads After DNC Sues Over $20 Million

The Democratic National Committee sued President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday. The suit targets recent television ads that promoted his political message. These ads cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Washington Times reports the group alleges the spending violates federal laws on government propaganda.

The ads launched last month. They appeared on stations across the country. Each message carried the tag “Paid for by the U.S. Government,” per Washington Examiner. The DNC claims these are “campaign-style advertisements” that break the law. They say the funds were not meant for politics.

The lawsuit cites a law Trump signed this year. It states Congress funds cannot be used “for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States not heretofore authorized by Congress,” according to NBC News. The group also points to the Anti-Deficiency Act. This law bars spending money Congress has not approved.

The DNC argues the ads hurt a fair election. The suit claims the goal was to boost Republican prospects in the 2026 midterm elections.

File details say the Office of Management and Budget moved the money. It came from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The funds went to a line item for “Commemorative Events.” Fox News notes that reports restricted this money to death memorials and agency anniversaries. The lawsuit calls the move “publicity or propaganda purposes.”

The ad campaign sparked criticism from lawmakers on both sides. Many questioned if the spending was legal. Trump reversed course on Monday. He announced on Truth Social he would stop using government funds for the ads.

He did not say if the government would get reimbursed for ads already run. The DNC lawsuit accuses the administration of illegally diverting $20 million in federal funds.

The filing claims President Trump personally directed the campaign. The DNC argues he “nationalized the midterm election” and told voters to “pretend that I am on the ballot.” The suit says this violates the ban on using federal money for politics. The case is now in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The DNC says the spending was unlawful. The legal battle over the $20 million is just beginning.
