Mention of Sophie Cunningham Blocked from Sports Discussions

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has become such a contentious subject in online WNBA discussions that moderators of one of Reddit’s major league forums have apparently resorted to filtering her name.

According to the New York Post, users of the WNBA subreddit discovered they could not freely submit posts containing Cunningham’s name, with the restriction becoming particularly noticeable when fans attempted to post about the player on her 30th birthday.

The filter reportedly covers multiple variations, including “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” “sc,” “scunningham,” “soph” and “sophiacunningham.”

That is a remarkably broad collection of terms for one basketball player.

A Reddit user identified as @Adventurous_Hope_101 subsequently published what the user said was a private exchange with the forum’s moderators seeking an explanation.

“We filter content based on Sophi because it tend to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W,” a moderator reportedly responded.

The moderator made clear that the restriction was intentional and suggested the user find another WNBA community if Cunningham was the subject they wanted to discuss.

“We have chosen to filter content,” the moderator wrote. “If you want to post freely about Sophie you can go to different sub.”

The exchange became more confrontational when the user continued questioning the policy.

“You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs,” the moderator reportedly wrote. “This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned.”

The restriction comes as Cunningham has become one of the most recognizable WNBA players speaking publicly about transgender participation in female sports.

Cunningham has rejected accusations that her position is motivated by hostility toward transgender people.

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham previously said.

She described her position as an attempt to combine respect for people with what she considers an important distinction in athletic competition.

“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,” Cunningham said. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Cunningham has also resisted attempts to place all of her views into a single political category.

“I’m very much in the middle,” she said. “I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

Her remarks nevertheless placed her squarely inside a national argument about eligibility rules for women’s sports.
