Two days remain until Americans head to the polls. A new report from Fox News reveals a stark truth about this election cycle. Voters say their choices are driven less by what they support and more by what they hate.
One voter from Colorado told reporters exactly why he is casting his ballot. “The Democrats down the line because Trump is an idiot,” he said. Another voter in Washington, D.C. named Lucy expressed deep frustration with the current leadership. “I am sick of the administration,” she stated. This city, this area, and this country have caused me great distress due to all the lies.
President Donald Trump is not on the ballot. Yet, his presence looms large over the race. Fox News found that most Democrat voters cited his administration as their main reason for voting. Mark from Utah explained his choice clearly. “Democrats,” he said about who he is voting for. “Because of corruption, cost of living, democracy.” He added that the president is enriching himself while the rest of the country gets poorer.
Some voters even agree with Republican policies but still plan to vote against the party. Jeremy from New York admitted this split. “I generally vote Democrat,” he said. The fact that I support many Republican positions is quite amusing. However, he cannot support the man in charge. “When you get behind someone who’s unfortunately in charge,” he noted, “then this is something I can’t really support.”
Not all opposition comes from the left. One voter from Virginia switched sides after years of support. “After six years of Make America Great Again, we’re not great again,” he said. “So I’m switching.” He claims the Trump administration failed to follow through on promises.
Republicans face a potential onslaught on Election Day. The New York Post reports that control of the House and Senate is in jeopardy. An October polling collapse put many candidates in danger. President Trump held rallies in red states to boost turnout. He has promised to use his veto pen if Democrats take charge.
The Cook Political Report sees seven “toss up” Senate races. Six are in normally Republican territory like Kansas and Alaska. One is in blue-leaning Michigan. Many races are within 2% in polling averages. Analysts predict a Democratic gain of 12 to 25 House seats. This could wipe out the Republican majority.
In South Carolina, Darline Graham faces a tough race. She is the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. She won the primary with help from President Trump but admitted her lack of experience. “I’m not that informed on national security,” she said in a debate. A GOP group spent $750,000 to help her as her opponent gained ground.
Data analyst Harry Enten sees “spooky” news for Democrats. He states that victory requires securing states the president previously won by double digits. CNN reported that Enten noted this has happened zero times since 2011. “The number is 0 since 2011,” he said. He also pointed out that the GOP has beaten final Senate polling averages by 4.1 points in these states.
If past errors hold, Republicans could keep the Senate with ease. Enten detailed that this would give the GOP control in Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, and Alaska. This would leave the Senate in Republican hands, 52-48. “Wave goodbye, to the blue wave,” one observer wrote.
Despite the polls, the final decision rests with the voters. The numbers on paper may not match the results in the booth.
