Pop Star’s Response To Fan’s Abortion Draws Criticism

Swedish pop singer Zara Larsson is facing a wave of backlash after a comment she posted on TikTok appeared to celebrate a fan’s abortion, prompting sharp criticism from pro-life activists and conservative commentators online.

The controversy began after a fan shared a TikTok video over the weekend showing Larsson performing her song “Midnight Sun” at a recent concert. In the caption, the fan wrote that she had unknowingly been pregnant at the time of the show.

“I didn’t know I was pregnant here but at least my baby got to hear midnight sun before I aborted it,” the caption read.

Several days later, Larsson responded directly in the comment section. “I killed the performance and then you killed it after the performance purrrrrr,” she wrote.

The comment quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing strong reactions from critics who accused the singer of making light of abortion.

Students for Life of America condemned the remark, writing that “speaking about babies this way is demonic” and arguing that it reflected what they described as the normalization of abortion. Ben Zeisloft, communications director for the Foundation to Abolish Abortion, also weighed in, asserting that “women are not victims of abortion.”

Other critics focused on Larsson’s influence among young fans. Columnist Samantha Smith argued that millions of girls look up to the pop star and described the exchange as a troubling example. Conservative commentator Isabel Brown mocked claims that abortion is never celebrated, while activist Robby Starbuck wrote that the remark was disturbing and inappropriate.

Larsson’s representatives did not immediately respond to media inquiries requesting comment about the controversy.

The backlash arrives during a period of heightened international visibility for the singer. Earlier this year, American figure skater Alysa Liu used Larsson and PinkPantheress’ track “Stateside” for her routine at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Liu’s performance helped secure her a historic gold medal, making her the first American woman to win the Olympic women’s figure skating title since 2002.

Larsson publicly praised the performance in a video reaction, commenting that “you know it’s good when the commentators are quiet,” and describing Liu’s routine as “so cute.”

Outside of music, Larsson has also drawn attention for her outspoken political views. She has been critical of Israel’s participation in international events and previously suggested a comparison between global support for Ukraine and reactions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a 2025 interview with Sveriges Radio, Larsson explained that she declined an invitation to perform at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest because Israel was allowed to compete.

“It’s a super big stage, over 100 million people watching,” she said. “But I didn’t feel like I could go on that stage and stand for those who competed, Israel. It didn’t feel right there and then.”

Larsson added that she did not regret turning down the opportunity and said she would make the same decision again.
