Republican investigators on Capitol Hill are turning up the heat on President Joe Biden and his family, digging into their financial transactions amid allegations of corruption and influence–peddling.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R–KY) and other GOP members traveled to the Treasury Department on Monday to gain access to suspicious activity reports (SARs) for the Biden family and their associates’ business transactions.
“The Biden family enterprise is centered on Joe Biden’s political career and connections, and it has generated an exorbitant amount of money for the Biden family,” Comer said in a statement. “We’ve identified six additional members of Joe Biden’s family who may have benefited from the Biden family’s businesses that we are investigating, bringing the total number of those involved or benefiting to nine.”
The president and his family have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. But Republicans say the financial documents they’ve uncovered so far, including some dating back to Biden’s time as vice president, raise serious red flags.
“Thousands of pages of financial records related to the Biden family, their companies, and associates’ business schemes were made available to members of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, which confirm the importance of this investigation,” Comer said.
The accusations have been bolstered by reports of a federal probe into Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings in countries like China and Ukraine. And some Republicans have raised concerns about an abandoned laptop, which they say contains evidence of possible influence peddling.
Separately, Democrats have criticized the GOP’s probe, accusing Republicans of ignoring former President Trump’s official misconduct while “trying to dig up dirt” on the Biden family.
But Comer says the committee is just doing its job.
“The Oversight Committee will continue to pursue additional bank records to follow the Bidens’ tangled web of financial transactions to determine if the Biden family has been targeted by foreign actors and if there is a national security threat,” Comer said.
The GOP’s investigation into the Biden family is only intensifying, as Republicans vow to “root out any corruption” surrounding the White House and deliver “much needed answers” to the American people.
