President Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico. But the reality is a bigger battle over who controls the map. His initial attempt to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America drew media criticism. This clash is about who gets to decide what words we use. The disagreement goes beyond simple geography.
According to the Daily Signal, the liberal reaction to the name change has been intense. The outlet notes that you can’t just change things to fit a political agenda, yet the left changes terms all the time. They try to force words like “Latinx” on people, but many Latinos hate it. Illegal immigrants are called “undocumented.” Homeless people are “unhoused.” Gender is “assigned at birth.” Describing a woman as a “birthing person” strikes many as wrong.
These groups also want to cancel and rename landmarks. They pulled down statues in Richmond last week. They removed Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson. They took down “Extra Billy” Smith. They also removed Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire.
Former President Joe Biden renamed nine major U.S. Army bases. These bases honored Confederate leaders. He changed Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, and Fort Pickett. He also renamed Fort Hood and Fort Rucker. According to the Daily Signal, roughly 650 geographic features nationwide received new names from him. Under Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, they created a “Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force.” They changed names with offensive terms like “Squaw.”
The media didn’t treat these changes as controversial. Everything a Democrat renames for “wokeness” is seen as good news. Name changes were mandated for the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians. Many college and high school teams lost “derogatory” mascots too. Now the same groups find the use of “America” on the map offensive. Conservatives usually prefer to stick with traditions. The left sees a red MAGA cap and gets angry. They want to remake the language we all use.
The Associated Press calls the tune for the press. They change the rules often. The Daily Signal notes that term tyrants genuflect to pressure groups. They demand we change how we speak. Trump’s move to rename the Gulf of Mexico is just the latest fight. He wants to add a patriotic tinge to the map. The left sees this as an ego trip. They don’t see it as patriotism.
