What You Need To Know About The Tainted Lettuce

Well, here’s a food recall that is likely to get a lot of people’s attention—and for good reason.

Federal investigators now say they’ve identified the source of a Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened people across multiple states, and the trail leads to iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico that was served at numerous Taco Bell restaurants.

Now, if you’re thinking this is just another routine recall, think again.

According to information posted by Taylor Farms on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, the company has already stopped accepting product from the implicated lot, suspended distribution of the affected iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, and notified customers while continuing to work with the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state health officials.

In other words, once investigators connected the dots, the supply chain moved quickly to pull the product.

But here’s where the scope of the situation starts to come into focus.

The recalled lettuce wasn’t sold under just one label. The FDA notice lists multiple brand names, and the affected products were distributed across 27 states. That includes Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Consumers are being told to check products with “best if used by” dates ranging from July 16 through Aug. 3.

Now, stay with me, because investigators have narrowed this down even further.

According to The Washington Post, federal officials announced Friday that one supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico shipped product directly to Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.


That’s significant because the FDA reported that 1,644 people infected with Cyclospora said they had eaten at Taco Bell locations in those same five states.

That doesn’t automatically prove every illness came from the restaurant chain, but it certainly explains why investigators focused so closely on that distribution network.

Taco Bell says it isn’t waiting around.

The company announced Friday that it has removed all affected Taylor Farms lettuce from its restaurants. That’s the kind of response customers generally expect once a contaminated ingredient has been identified.

The ripple effects aren’t stopping there.

Sysco, one of the country’s largest food distributors, has also suspended distribution of processed iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms that originated in Mexico.

“We will continue to actively monitor the situation and work with regulators as needed,” a Sysco spokesperson said.

The company added that food safety remains a top priority and pointed to its quality assurance procedures designed to protect the products it distributes.

So what exactly is Cyclospora?

It’s a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis. According to health officials, infections can lead to prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and other gastrointestinal symptoms that may last for days or even weeks without treatment.

Unlike some other forms of food contamination, Cyclospora has a particularly troubling origin.


Matthew Moore, a food scientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, told The Washington Post that Cyclospora contamination comes from human fecal material. One possible explanation, he said, is that contaminated irrigation water used during crop production allowed the parasite to reach the lettuce before it entered the food supply.

“The fact that human fecal material is finding its way into the food is definitely striking,” Moore said. “There’s so much lettuce in this country.”

And that’s really the larger issue.

Lettuce is one of the most widely consumed fresh produce items in the United States. It moves through enormous distribution networks, passes through multiple processors, and ends up in restaurants, grocery stores, cafeterias, and kitchens across the country. When contamination occurs near the beginning of that chain, the potential reach can be enormous before anyone realizes there’s a problem.
