Sen. Ted Cruz (R–TX) leveled harsh criticism at Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday, accusing him of being the most “partisan and political“ AG in US history and alleging that he is intent on indicting former President Donald Trump out of a personal desire for revenge.
During an appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity,” Cruz assailed Garland for his apparent decision to target Trump for “obstruction of justice“ in connection with alleged efforts to hide classified documents.
The Texas Senator noted that Garland was pursuing a case against Trump that would also shield Joe Biden from potential culpability in relation to the classified materials issue, as Biden‘s camp is facing allegations of its own.
“He‘s not saying the underlying classified documents were a crime because he‘d have to indict Joe Biden, too,” Cruz said of Garland.
Instead, the former presidential candidate claimed that Garland “will create a crime about a non–crime, that‘s going to be the basis of the indictment.”
He doubled down on Garland‘s goal, predicting that the Attorney General would also pursue charges against Biden‘s son, Hunter, but suggested the investigation was a tactic to protect Joe Biden from potential criminal proceedings.
“They want to use Hunter Biden as a scapegoat to justify targeting Donald Trump,” Cruz charged during the segment.
Garland has come under fire from some Republicans, including Sens. Chuck Grassley (R–IA) and Josh Hawley (R–MO) who wrote to the AG in April of 2021 questioning whether he was using the Department of Justice as a political tool to target Trump.
Also in April, Sen. Mike Lee (R–UT) urged Garland to avoid “going beyond his proper scope in order to pursue politically–motivated actions.”
It is unclear whether Garland will pursue formal charges against Trump, but Cruz vowed to oppose such a move, insisting that the attorney general is “effectively an arm of the DNC.”
He added, “The hypocrisy is massive. And mark my words, I believe Merrick Garland will indict Donald Trump. He wants to indict Donald Trump because he hates Donald Trump.”
