Michael Tyler, Harris’s campaign communications director, was quick to criticize Trump for trying to back out of the previously agreed-upon September 10 debate. He argued that Trump is “running scared” and trying to switch to Fox News to avoid a showdown on ABC. Tyler emphasized that Harris is committed to the original debate date and venue, challenging Trump to stop dodging and show up as planned.
Trump, however, took to Truth Social late Friday to announce that he had agreed to a debate on Fox News on September 4, claiming the original debate with President Joe Biden on ABC was canceled after Biden dropped out of the race.
Trump’s team has scheduled the Fox News debate to take place in Pennsylvania, with Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum as moderators. Trump also hinted at a full arena audience, similar to his previous debate with Biden.
This situation has added another layer of complexity to the 2024 election cycle. Trump’s campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, had previously expressed concerns about scheduling a debate with Harris, suggesting that the Democrats might still change their nominee, which adds another wrinkle to this evolving narrative.
What’s clear is that both campaigns are jockeying for position, trying to set the terms of this high-stakes debate. Whether it’s the choice of network, the date, or the moderators, every detail seems to be a point of contention.
