Tyler Robinson’s Behavior Has Erika Kirk In Tears

The man accused of fatally shooting Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk appeared in court Monday for an evidentiary hearing that quickly became an emotional ordeal for Kirk’s family.

According to reporters inside the courtroom in Provo, Utah, Tyler Robinson was seen laughing with his attorney before the proceedings began, a moment that drew immediate attention from those in attendance.

NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin reported on X that Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, was visibly emotional before the hearing.

“Erika Kirk was crying before the hearing started,” Entin wrote. He also noted that Donald Trump Jr. and his wife were seated in the front row, while “Tyler Robinson was laughing with his attorney before the hearing started.” Entin added that Erika Kirk left the courtroom as testimony turned to the details of the shooting.

Turning Point Action CEO Tyler Bowyer condemned Robinson’s reported demeanor.

“Robinson laughing before the hearing today,” Bowyer wrote on X. “People trying to defend a monster like this are clinically insane.”

Other reporters described the difficult moments that followed once testimony began.

Fox News correspondent Matt Finn reported that Erika Kirk and several members of Charlie Kirk’s family left the courtroom as a police officer began recounting the moments surrounding the fatal shooting at Utah Valley University last September.

The New York Times’ Robert Draper similarly reported that Kirk’s widow and her supporters stood and exited the courtroom as law enforcement witnesses described Charlie Kirk being struck by gunfire. According to Draper, Erika Kirk later returned after a break.

Draper also observed that Robinson appeared to lean forward and listen more intently as one former campus police officer described the chaos immediately following the shooting.

Monday’s hearing centered on whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Prosecutors are also seeking permission to continue pursuing the death penalty if Robinson is ultimately convicted.

Robinson has been charged in connection with the September shooting of Charlie Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem. He has not been convicted, and the charges remain pending.

Before the hearing, Erika Kirk released a statement reflecting on the family’s loss.

“Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and father,” she said. “Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children.”

She also thanked those who have supported the family since the shooting.

“We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives,” she said, adding that the family would not comment further while the case is ongoing.

A source familiar with the proceedings told the New York Post that the family had been advised there could be graphic testimony and evidence presented during the hearing, leaving it to them to decide whether to remain in the courtroom.

Robinson also drew attention during an earlier court appearance in December when some observers claimed the tie he wore resembled the colors of the transgender pride flag. Separately, reports have stated that Robinson lived with a roommate who identified as transgender.

According to court filings cited by multiple news outlets, investigators allege that Robinson later sent a text message explaining his motive for the shooting, writing that he had “had enough of his hatred” and adding, “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Those allegations are expected to be addressed as the criminal case moves forward.
