Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) stepped up to defend the Second Amendment while standing in favor of school safety as part of a recently issued and highly passionate speech given on the Senate floor last week amid the resounding calls from Democrats to make use of this tragedy to push addition gun control laws in the wake of the events that took place in Nashville.
Cruz issued the comments defending the Second Amendment as he brought back out two distinct of legislations — both the Securing Our Schools Act and the Protect Our Children’s Schools Act — to help heighten school security and increase overall access for students to mental health treatments.
Protecting kids in schools have been a hallmark of Cruz’s priorities while in the U.S. Senate as evidenced by a series of other pieces of legislation he has put forth to address the issue, which includes the Safe Kids, Safe Schools, Safe Communities Act of 2022 and another named the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act.
“I have fought for 11 years, I’ve introduced legislation, after legislation, after legislation to lock up gun criminals,” Cruz claimed. “If you commit a crime with a gun, you should be prosecuted and go to jail. If you’re a felon or fugitive or someone with serious mental illness, and you try to illegally buy guns, you should be prosecuted and sent to jail.”
“And repeatedly, Democrats block those bills. The sad reality of this body is if you’re a mom at home, who wants to be able to protect your kids, the Democrats are really eager to disarm you,” Cruz went on. “But if you’re a gangbanger in Chicago, they’re not interested in a gun task force to lock you up and take the murderers off the street. Mr. President, why is it an unreasonable question to ask what’s wrong with having more police officers to protect our kids?”
“I want to show you how little interest the Democrats have. The Senator from Connecticut has gone. He gave his little speech and ran away,” he went on. “This is supposed to be the world’s greatest deliberative body. But as long as the press doesn’t do its job. The Senator from Connecticut can send out a fundraising email tonight to all the gun control groups saying, ‘Guess what? We’re coming after the Second Amendment. Please click here.’ That’s cold comfort to the parents who are scared at home right now, to the kids who are scared at home right now. The solutions put forth by the Democrats in this body are not designed to stop crime!”
