Trump Tells Joke About Interaction With World Leader

President Donald Trump once again zeroed in on one of his favorite Democratic foils, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), telling reporters in the Oval Office that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made clear he does not want Omar back in Somalia.

“You know I met the head of Somalia, did you know that? And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take [Ilhan Omar] back,” Trump said Thursday evening. “And he said, ‘I don’t want her.’”

The comment came as Trump was also taking shots at Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), whom he dismissed as a “low-IQ person,” during a freewheeling back-and-forth with the press.

But the jab at Omar was particularly sharp, given her long history of clashing with Trump and her reputation as one of the most outspoken progressive voices in Congress.

Omar, meanwhile, has found herself in the headlines for her comments following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk earlier this month on a Utah campus. While she initially described the shooting video as “mortifying” and said she thought of Kirk’s wife and children, her remarks quickly turned combative.

“There are a lot of people who are out there talking about [Charlie Kirk] just wanting to have a civil debate,” Omar said. “These people are full of shit, and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”

The exchange encapsulates the deeply polarized fault lines in American politics: Trump casting Omar as a radical outsider rejected even by her homeland, and Omar responding to tragedy with rhetoric that mixes grief with fury at her political opponents.

Both statements are guaranteed to intensify the bitter political combat that has made Omar a lightning rod on Capitol Hill and Trump a relentless critic of the progressive left. For supporters on each side, the clash only reinforces the belief that the other represents not just a political opponent, but a threat to the country’s direction.
